Windows 10 Memory Usage Stays Above 95% With No High-Memory Process: Troubleshooting (Heroku Uses 4GB)

In Windows 10, memory usage consistently exceeds 95%. Checking Task Manager shows 98% usage. However, the two processes consuming the most memory combined only take up about 2GB, while the total memory is 16GB. The other processes do not use much memory, so theoretically, the usage should not be this high

3. I opened 360 Total Security – the Optimize and Accelerate interface, and optimized basically all pending items. The usage still exceeded 95%. See Figure 3.

4. After restarting the computer, I noticed the taskbar icons were not vertically centered. However, memory usage was still around 25%. I opened 360 Total Security – Optimize and Accelerate interface – Optimization Record – Use small taskbar icons – Restore default. See Figure 4.

5. I usually turn on the computer on Monday and leave it running until shutting it down on Friday or Saturday. Generally, by Thursday, memory usage reaches around 95%. See Figure 5.

6. After using 360 Total Security – My Computer – Checkup Now – One-click Repair, memory usage dropped to around 50%. Checking Task Manager, I found that PhpStorm’s memory usage had dropped significantly, from around 3200 MB down to about 900 MB. See Figure 6.

7. However, in less than half a day, PhpStorm’s memory usage basically returned to around 3GB. Still, an IDE using 3GB is not unacceptable. The main issue was that there were over 10GB of memory left, and I could not figure out how it was being almost entirely used up.

Network Diagnostic Usage (Windows 网络数据使用监视器) is abbreviated as NDU. Press win + R to open Run, enter regedit to open the Registry Editor, and navigate to the following option. Double-click the Start entry on the right, and in the pop-up dialog box, set the value to 4 (the default is 2); this disables certain parts of ndu. Restart the computer, then observe whether the usage of memory, CPU, disk, etc. improves. See Figure 7.

10. Generally, a non-paged pool that keeps growing during use is caused by memory leaks in some software. It is recommended to uninstall infrequently used software first, and then try uninstalling software that might cause memory leaks. Ultimately, I uninstalled the software: heroku. After restarting the computer, memory usage dropped to around 70%. This indicates that heroku was basically consuming about 4GB of memory (25%). 11. From turning it on Monday to Friday, it ran continuously for 5 days, usually put to sleep before getting off work every evening. Now, by Friday, memory usage is still basically stable at around 85%. Compared to Figure 1, the memory consumed by PhpStorm and Google Chrome has relatively increased by about 3GB. See Figure 9.
